PRESS RELEASE

Town Hall recognizes the good work of the local charity associations

The Cancer Charity Centre, the Roundabout Charity Shop and the Original Charity & English Lending Library have been hard at work for decades

Javea. Friday, 28 October 2011. The Town Hall paid tribute to the three charity associations that manage charity shops in Javea. The Cancer Charity Centre, the Roundabout Charity Shop and the Original Charity & English Lending Library, composed mainly of British residents, all raise money through the sale of second-hand items such as clothing, books and furniture. All the proceeds go directly to charity organisations, as well as to the improvement of local health facilities. In a special ceremony in the plenary hall, Mayor José Chulvi presented the presidents of the three associations, Irene Ellis, Gill Rose and Georgie Harvey, with commemorative plaques. On behalf of everyone, Chulvi thanked the volunteers who came along to the Town Hall, expressing, “our thanks and appreciation for the excellent work and selfless dedication throughout many years to help the less fortunate in society”.

Oscar Anton, Councillor for Resident Relations and Tere Bisquert, Councillor for Social Services, were also on hand to show their appreciation for the hard work of the associations.

A spokesperson for the Cancer Charity Centre, located in Javea Park, explained that they had recently been established as the foundation ECMOR (English Cathedra of Modern Oncology Research) and that one of their first measures has been to acquire a state-of-the-art machine that is able to detect cancer through a DNA sample which has been made available to Denia hospital. The association has raised 120,000 euros for this equipment and they face four annual instalments of between 20,000-30,000 euros to complete payment and take on the maintenance. The association, with 62 volunteers in Javea active since 1998, has always focused its donations in the fight against cancer and has, to date, raised more than 700,000 euros.

As for the 70 volunteers of Original Charity Shop and Library, also located in the Arenal, they recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. Among the beneficiaries of their donations are: the Asilo Hermanos Cholbi, the Raquel Paya school in Denia, the Preventario de Gandia, the Refugio Franciscano in Palma de Gandia, the Centro del Día del Convento de Xabia and Fontilles as well as many international causes, including disaster relief. The association has, for many years, also sent weekly bags of clothing to the Caritas in Real de Gandia as well as helping other associations in the Marina Alta such as ADIMA and AMADEM.

Last, but not least, the Roundabout Charity Shop, with about 40 volunteers from various nationalities, has been supporting projects that benefit the residents of Javea since the 1970s. It started with a shop called “Amigos de la Cruz Roja” and then extended their support to other organization such as the handicap association ‘Amigos de los Minusválidos’, HELP, Emaus, Asilo Hermanos Cholbi and even the Guardia Civil.
