Petitions - English Text

English versions of the text of the two petitions pertaining to the proposed Port Expansion

November 2008

To the Petitions Committee, European Parliament

The people who have signed this letter SUPPORT THE CONTENTS of Petition number 1042/08, with its six annexes sent to the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament by the Civic Platform for the Defence of the Land and coast of Xàbia (Plataforma Civica en Defensa del Territori i del Litoral de Xàbia) on the 17th of July 2008. Likewise, WE SUPPORT Petition number 1204/08 and attached documents, also sent to the European Parliament on 14th July 2008 by the Mayor-President of Xàbia Town Council, asking that the mechanisms necessary to prevent the environmental and scenic aggression expected by the expansion of Xàbia Port be mediated.

Let it be made clear that the signatories below reject any expansion of the port of Xàbia / Jávea (Alicante) Spain since this implies a devastating, irreversible and unsustainable effect on the Grava and Tangó beaches (included in the Marine Reserve of the Cabo de San Antonio) and of its immediate surroundings which make up the Montgó Natural Park; because of the deterioration of the marine/terrestrial landscape and the adjacent urban centre with consequential traffic chaos, maritime and general contamination.

To the President of the Valencia Parliament

The people who have signed this letter, ask the Valencian Parliament for the approval of an amendment to the projected budget of the Generalitat for 2009, 2010 and 2011 that the portion assigned to the re-organisation and expansion of Xàbia Port IS WITHDRAWN, AND THAT THE SUM OF MONEY WHICH WAS DESTINED FOR THE REORGANISATION AND EXPANSION OF THE PORT, REFERRED TO ABOVE, BE USED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A COVERED, AIR-CONDITIONED MUNICIPAL XÀBIA SWIMMING POOL, XÀBIA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM, REORGANISATION OF THE FREGINAL GULLY OF XÀBIA AND TO UPGRADE, REPAIR AND MAINTAIN THE SCHOOLS OF XÀBIA IN A WORTHY CONDITION, ABOLISHING THE PREFABRICATED SCHOOL ROOMS.
