Tourist stays on the increase

Income from tourists increases by 10%

The total expenditure of foreign tourists in the Comunidad Valenciana grew by 10.3% during the first five months of the year. The Comunidad is ahead of the Canaries, with a 5.8%, followed by Catalonia, Andalusia and Madrid. All regions experienced a growth in visitor numbers.

According to the Tourism Expenditure Survey (EGATUR) which is produced by the Institute for Tourism Studies in the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, total spending in Spain stood at 17,043 million euros. The figure represents an increase of 6.7% over the same period last year.

Non- hotel accommodation registered an increase in the number of travellers during May of 11.4% over the same period in 2007 and 7.7% in overnight stays, a figure that exceeds 6.3% of the Spanish average. The increase in overnight stays has been both in domestic figures, with 12.7%, and foreign, with 5%.

During May, the Comunidad received a total of 122,613 travellers and 853,486 overnight stays in non-hotel accommodation, which include apartments, camp sites and rural tourism accomodation.

The Valenciano camp sites registered a total of 47,299 travellers and 351,611 overnight stays, an increase of 20.4% which makes the Comunidad the second destination in the number of overnight stays.
