Press release from Xàbia Town Hall: June 18th 2011
With regard to the first actions of the mayor and the new government team, they have already begun to deal with complaints from neighborhood groups and the business community in relation to traffic and parking issues.
In the Arenal a new parking area will be created and there will be changes to the traffic flow to relieve congestion in the area.
In the Old Town it is planned to leave open the Plaza Celestino Pons and the calle Sor Maria Gallart at lunch-time and at night. Although current parking regulations will remain around the Mercat Municipal during the market's business hours, the places will be made available during the rest of the day for public use, with the intention of facilitating access for both residents and customers of the restaurant and bar trade.
The Town Council has also rethought the cycle path between the Port and Old Town. The mayor is aware that the road structure in this important route "is weak" and has therefore reviewed the proposal provided to the Town Hall by the business association of the Old Town which advocates an alternative route for bicycles which will not disrupt the traffic and will avoid traffic jams. At the moment, municipal technicians are analyzing the possibility to reverting to two way traffic flows in the Avenida Juan Carlos I and Avenida de Alicante. Also related to this issue, the government team plan to reschedule the times for loading and unloading vehicles around the perimeter roads (San Joaquin, Ronda Sur, Ronda Nord and Principe de Asturias).
It is also working on an alternative solution to the cycle path in Primer Montañar between the Port and the Arenal beach. The executive is also looking at converting some roads adjacent to the beach area, to provide two way access, enabling cars to find parking places on roads near the beach front.
