5. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION

· Among the cultural activities in Jávea the organisation of exhibitions and theatre is prominent, as well as the numerous traditional fiestas (Hogueras de San Juan, Nuestra Señora del Loreto, Santa Lucia, etc)

· Worth highlighting too is the “Campaign for the promotion and use of valenciano” and the “Language Week” organised through the Department for Standardization of valenciano.

· In this respect numerous activities are offered towards the integration of immigrant groups and to enable the local population to get to know their land and culture.

· With regard to the level of group membership, Jávea is noteworthy for its high number of associations. In reality 55 associations exist of which 30 are cultural, 21 sporting and four business or commercial.

· The participation of citizens in elections is, on average, more than 50%, the European elections being those with the greatest percentage of abstention (60% in 2004). Abstentions in elections for the Valencian regional Government have remained around 28% in the last 10 years, however in the general elections abstentions have risen from 22% in 1993 to 32% in 2000. With regard to the abstention in the local elections, in 1991 and 1995 it stayed around 24%, in 1999 was almost 30% and in 2003 35%.
